Domestic Violence
The Domestic Violence program of the 19th Judicial District Clerk of Court was initiated in January, 1983, in accordance with revised statute 46:2131. The program offers services to assist women, men and children in need of protection from domestic violence in East Baton Rouge Parish.
When a victim of domestic violence calls or visits the office seeking assistance in obtaining a temporary restraining order, after interviewing and verifying qualification, the staff helps them to obtain protection from their abuser through the courts. Louisiana State Law requires that the Clerk of Court's Office make forms available for application for protective orders, provide clerical assistance to petitioners when necessary and also provide services of a notary for the completion of the affidavit.
Our office assists the Iris Domestic Violence Center in obtaining TROs (Temporary Restraining Orders) or protective orders on rule day and provides law enforcement agencies with copies of the order and judgements to ensure proper enforcement. The department also works closely with the Sheriff's office concerning services. Our program has been considered a model throughout the State of Louisiana and has received widespread recognition.
